Welcome to My Cancervive Fundraising Page
Hello my friend
On October 12, 2018 I was diagnosed with cancer, joining an estimated 220,000 other Canadians who received similar news that year. Further testing revealed that I had a strain of Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma called Small Lymphocytic Lymphoma (SLL).
This diagnosis rocked me and my family to our core, and what has made it more challenging is knowing that this strain is treatable but not curable. I’m thankful to say that my health has remained stable through the past year, and I pray that I will be say this for many years to come.
Cancer is ravaging our society. This year 220,000 Canadians will receive news that they have cancer, and nearly 1 in 2 Canadians will be afflicted with cancer in their lifetime. Cancer dominates charitable fundraising, with big events like Run for the Cure and the Ride to Conquer Cancer attracting millions of dollars. These are incredibly worthy events, but there are also smaller events that operate in their shadow. Cancervive is one of these events, raising money for Wellspring Calgary.
The Cancervive 2019 ride is a 460 kilometer cycling event that takes place over 4 days at the end of September. I love riding, and that’s part of the reason why I chose this event, but I am deeply thankful for the work that Wellspring does for cancer patients in Calgary. Cancer, the C word, is among the scariest words you can hear in a doctor’s office. When I received my diagnosis I struggled to understand what was happening, and Wellspring was a resource that I and many cancer patients have turned to for support.
Wellspring is a provincial charity that recognizes that the cancer journey has two roads: medical and emotional. They focus exclusively on the non medical road, providing emotional, psychological and practical support for cancer patients and their families. Lorraine and I have both benefitted from their programs, and it is a privilege to take part in an event that raises much needed resources for this worthy charity.
I’m hoping to raise at least $3,000 and have set a stretch goal of $10 per kilometer, which would be $4,660. I’m contributing $300 and my time and would love to see you match me in at least one of these contributions! Please let me know by September 13 if you can support me, as the ride is fast approaching.
I look forward to sharing stories and photos of the ride with you, and thank you for your support through this journey.
