There's a reason they call me Deputy Cheeseburger
This epic journey started way back in January of 2016. We had heard of the Stairclimb Challenge in Calgary, and we were discussing whether or not we should compete. 4 of us jumped at the opportunity, but as with any great challenge, we experienced moments of self doubt as time went on. I wasn't sure if I was physically capable of completing the challenge, and had agreed far too quickly without properly thinking it through. Kory didn't know if he could get off work, or if he would have enough money for gas. I told him that he already had a business degree, so if he just quit his job to climb stairs with us, I would find him a ride to Calgary. In return, he said he would buy me a cheeseburger, if I completed the challenge. And so, Deputy Cheeseburger was born. Together with two other firefighters (Brent Toews & Keane Martin) we travelled to Calgary and conquered the Bow. Although finishing times will show that I savoured the conquering a little longer than my comrades, which may or may not be directly related to the whole cheeseburger thing. The four of us shared a bond that was the epitome of Brotherhood. On Sunday evening, we returned to Beaverlodge, like the victorious warriors that we were.
Sadly, Kory passed away in December of 2016. However, I am proud to say that I got to spend time with this truly inspirational young man, whose sole pupose in life, was to bring kindness to the world.
This year, I will be climbing the Bow Tower in memory of my Fire Service brother, Firefighter Kory Rycroft. I intend to complete this challenge in his honour. To continue his legacy of kindness, I’m raising money in support of Wellspring Calgary by participating in the Firefighter Stairclimb Challenge on May 7, 2017. Please consider sponsoring one of our team members and supporting our efforts!
By making a donation to the Beaver Brigade, or Beaver Brigade 2.0, you are helping to make a difference in the lives of many! Proceeds raised will go towards Wellspring Calgary -- a warm & welcoming place that provides free programs and resources to people who have been impacted by cancer, and those who care for them, so that no one has to face cancer alone…
Please make a donation today and help me to honour my fallen brother.
