Every year firefighters from all over the province gather in Calgary to participate in the annual stair climb challenge. It’s a 1204 Step climb up the BOW tower in full bunker gear with breathing apparatus. The Wellspring Calgary firefighters put this on in order to raise awareness and funds for firefighters suffering from cancer from the line of duty.
This year it’s especially important for us at Blackfalds Fire as one of our own was recently diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. Everyone always hears the injuries or fatalities firefighters face, but you never hear of the carcinogens or toxins we are exposed to constantly. Cancer is affecting all firefighters at alarming rates and is something we battle far more frequently than on scene injuries.
This year we will have 12 members participating in the challenge and raising funds for the Wellspring Firefighter Stairclimb Challenge. Please support us in any way you can, and keep our fellow firefighter in your thoughts as him and his family battle this terrible disease.
